Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Portland

Portland became one of the defining American specialty coffee cities by joining small-scale roasting, strong food culture and fiercely independent neighbourhood cafés. Its influence reaches far beyond the city's size.

How the scene took shape

Portland had independent coffeehouses before the third wave, but Stumptown's 1999 opening on SE Division is the clearest modern turning point. Founder Duane Sorenson put close producer relationships, freshness and exacting preparation at the centre of the business. The baristas and roasters trained in that ecosystem went on to start many other companies, multiplying its effect.

The coffee scene today

The city remains rich in small roasters, destination brew bars and excellent everyday neighbourhood cafés. Portland's scene has matured beyond one dominant roast style: visitors can find bright Nordic-influenced filters, fuller espresso and experimental processing, usually served without much fuss.
