Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Atlanta

Atlanta's specialty scene grew through roasting and hospitality rather than a single fashionable district. An early production roastery helped seed local knowledge, and later neighbourhood cafés made better sourcing and preparation visible across the city.

How the scene took shape

A major milestone came in 1994, when Batdorf & Bronson built an Atlanta roastery and began producing specialty coffee locally. Its first stand-alone area café, under the Dancing Goats name, opened in Decatur in 2007. During the 2010s, a wider set of independent roasters and cafés gave Atlanta a more varied identity, drawing on the city's food, arts and neighbourhood cultures.

The coffee scene today

The current market stretches through downtown, the eastside, westside and nearby Decatur. Visitors can find established roasters, small seasonal menus and cafés that place Southern hospitality ahead of coffee jargon. Espresso leads, with batch brew and single-origin offerings now common.
