Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in London

London has one of Europe's broadest specialty coffee scenes, shaped by old Soho espresso bars, Australian and New Zealand café culture, and a generation of local roasters. Good coffee now belongs to ordinary neighbourhood life as much as destination shops.

How the scene took shape

Italian espresso bars were part of London long before the term specialty coffee took hold. Monmouth began roasting and selling coffee in Covent Garden in 1978, then opened at Borough Market in 2001. The modern wave accelerated after 2005, and Square Mile, founded by Anette Moldvaer and James Hoffmann in 2008, became an influential roaster and training ground.

The coffee scene today

Independent cafés and small roasting companies reach across the capital, with particular depth in the centre, east London and a growing number of outer neighbourhoods. The range runs from exacting espresso and seasonal filter menus to welcoming bakeries and all-day cafés that happen to serve excellent coffee.
