Local coffee story
Specialty coffee in Istanbul
Istanbul is not simply a city that adopted specialty coffee; it is one of the places where coffeehouse culture first became an urban institution. Contemporary roasters now work alongside a living Turkish coffee tradition that reaches back to the sixteenth century.
How the scene took shape
Coffee began to be served in Istanbul coffeehouses in the sixteenth century, creating places for conversation, news and public life. Turkish coffee's preparation and social customs were added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2013. The city's modern specialty phase developed much later, especially in the early 2010s, when independent businesses such as Kronotrop helped introduce fresh roasting, single origins and modern espresso and filter service.
The coffee scene today
Today's scene spans traditional cezve service, European-style espresso bars and highly contemporary roasteries. Karaköy, Kadıköy, Beşiktaş and nearby districts each have active café clusters. The most interesting shops treat Turkish coffee and global specialty practice as parallel traditions rather than rivals.
