Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Bangkok

Bangkok has become a leading Southeast Asian coffee city by connecting inventive urban cafés with Thailand's northern coffee farms. Its specialty scene is energetic and design-aware, but its most important development is a deeper local supply chain.

How the scene took shape

Thailand's royal crop-substitution programmes encouraged highland coffee cultivation during the late twentieth century. Bangkok's modern specialty movement gathered momentum in the early 2010s through several roasters and cafés. Roots became an influential contributor by working closely with Thai producers and treating local coffee as the foundation of its menu rather than a novelty.

The coffee scene today

The city now supports destination roasteries, small espresso counters and highly creative bars across central districts and older neighbourhoods. Thai-grown lots from Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and other northern areas are increasingly prominent. Fermentation experiments, seasonal drinks and serious filter brewing give Bangkok a distinctive local voice.
