Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Taipei

Taipei's specialty scene joins meticulous brewing with Taiwan's own coffee-growing history and a highly developed tea culture. The result is a city comfortable with close attention to aroma, processing and service.

How the scene took shape

Coffee cultivation in Taiwan dates to the Japanese colonial period, but Taipei's modern specialty identity emerged through independent cafés, competitors and roasters in the 2000s and early 2010s. Fika Fika, opened by James Chen in 2013, and Simple Kaffa, led by World Barista Champion Berg Wu, helped make the city internationally visible. They belong to a broader generation rather than a single point of origin.

The coffee scene today

Taipei now has dense café clusters across Zhongshan, Da'an and older central neighbourhoods. Menus often move easily between espresso, hand-poured coffee and Taiwanese-grown lots. Thoughtful interiors matter, but knowledgeable brewing and a patient approach to tasting remain the scene's strongest signatures.
