Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Barcelona

Barcelona's specialty scene adds modern roasting and sourcing to a long habit of quick, social café drinking. The city's food culture, international population and compact street life have helped small coffee bars become part of many neighbourhoods.

How the scene took shape

The modern movement became visible in the early 2010s through several independent projects. Jordi Mestre began Nomad as a London coffee cart in 2011, then returned to Barcelona and opened a coffee lab in 2014. Its roasting, training and wholesale work helped connect the local scene with a wider European specialty network.

The coffee scene today

Barcelona now has accomplished local roasters, focused espresso counters and cafés that pair seasonal coffee with baking or brunch. The old city and Eixample remain dense with options, while Gràcia, Poblenou and other districts have developed their own regulars. Spanish espresso habits and lighter modern styles coexist.
