Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Seoul

Seoul's specialty scene grew within an already intense café culture, replacing the idea of coffee as mainly a social backdrop with close attention to green coffee, roasting and flavour. Its pace of experimentation remains one of its defining traits.

How the scene took shape

Large chains and themed cafés expanded rapidly in the 2000s, creating a huge audience for coffee. Coffee Libre, founded in 2009 by Pil Hoon Seu, Korea's first licensed Q Grader, became a key first-generation specialty roaster. Its sourcing work and education helped show that Korean cafés could lead with coffee quality itself, not only atmosphere.

The coffee scene today

Seoul now combines influential roasteries, tiny single-bar counters and highly designed multi-floor cafés. Neighbourhoods such as Yeonnam, Seongsu and Hannam offer distinct scenes, while filter coffee, unusual processing methods and meticulous presentation reach an unusually broad audience.
