Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Cape Town

Cape Town helped establish specialty coffee in South Africa and remains one of the continent's strongest café cities. Its roasters draw on an outward-looking food culture while building local training, service and appreciation for African-grown coffee.

How the scene took shape

Joel Singer and a small team started Origin Coffee Roasting in Cape Town in late 2005, opening in De Waterkant with an on-site roastery and later a barista academy. It became a formative local business, although other cafés and roasters also contributed to the city's shift toward freshly roasted, traceable coffee.

The coffee scene today

The city centre, Woodstock, Observatory, the Atlantic seaboard and southern suburbs now offer established roasters and smaller independent bars. Espresso remains central, with filter menus and African single origins increasingly visible. Many cafés pair technical ambition with Cape Town's strong baking, design and daytime dining cultures.
