Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Lisbon

Lisbon's specialty coffee culture is young beside the city's established habit of taking a short bica at the counter. The two worlds increasingly overlap, giving visitors a choice between historic everyday rituals and an energetic new roasting scene.

How the scene took shape

Traditional Portuguese cafés long centred on dark espresso blends, often connected to former colonial trade. A distinct specialty movement emerged in the mid-2010s. Copenhagen Coffee Lab and Fábrica were among the visible early operators; Fábrica began roasting in Lisbon in 2015 and describes itself as the city's first specialty roaster.

The coffee scene today

Specialty cafés now extend from the historic centre into Arroios, Estrela, Alcântara and neighbouring areas. Local roasters serve modern espresso and filter coffee to residents as well as visitors, while a growing number of shops work with Portuguese producers, bakers and designers rather than copying a single international format.
