Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Oslo

Oslo is one of the foundations of Nordic specialty coffee. A long roasting history, strong competition culture and close attention to light-roasted filter coffee gave the city an outsized international influence.

How the scene took shape

Solberg & Hansen, founded by Carl Solberg and Fritjof Hansen in 1879, anchors Oslo's older roasting tradition. The modern shift is closely associated with Tim Wendelboe, who entered barista competitions in 1998, won the World Barista Championship in 2004 and opened his Oslo roastery in 2007. His focus on farming, roasting and brewing became a reference point well outside Norway.

The coffee scene today

Oslo still rewards drinkers who prefer clean, lightly roasted filter coffee, but the scene is broader than one Nordic profile. Established roasters, compact espresso bars and bakery cafés operate across the centre and inner east, with serious coffee presented in a notably calm, direct way.
