Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has a compact but mature specialty coffee culture. Its cycling neighbourhoods suit small local cafés, while Dutch trading history and a strong contemporary food scene give roasters an audience interested in both provenance and everyday quality.

How the scene took shape

The Netherlands has traded and consumed coffee for centuries, but Amsterdam's modern specialty culture took shape around the turn of this century. Bocca, founded in 2001, describes itself as the country's first specialty coffee roaster and became a visible early advocate for direct sourcing, roasting education and barista training.

The coffee scene today

Today the city supports experienced roasters, multi-roaster bars and relaxed neighbourhood cafés from the canal belt to De Pijp, Oud-West and Noord. Filter coffee is easy to find, yet the scene is not overly ceremonial; many of its strongest shops make careful coffee feel like a normal part of the day.
