Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Mexico City

Mexico City sits close to some of the world's most distinctive coffee-producing regions, yet its modern specialty culture is relatively recent. The best cafés make that proximity tangible through Mexican lots, producer relationships and an increasingly confident local roasting style.

How the scene took shape

Coffee has long moved through the capital, but much of Mexico's highest-grade production was historically exported. During the 2010s, independent projects such as Buna and Café Avellaneda helped build a local audience for traceable Mexican coffee, careful roasting and skilled brewing. The movement had several contributors rather than one settled first shop.

The coffee scene today

Roma, Condesa, Juárez and the historic centre contain many well-known bars, but specialty coffee reaches farther across the metropolis. Menus often highlight states such as Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz and Puebla. Experimental processing and producer-led projects give the city a character rooted in Mexico rather than imported wholesale.
