Local coffee story
Specialty coffee in Hong Kong
Hong Kong's specialty coffee culture has grown within a city already fluent in milk tea, diner coffee and fast-moving food trends. Small spaces, high rents and curious customers have produced compact bars with unusually ambitious menus.
How the scene took shape
Cha chaan teng coffee remains a vital part of Hong Kong life, while a distinct specialty scene became established in the early 2010s. Jennifer Liu founded The Coffee Academics in Hong Kong and opened its first café in 2012. Cupping Room and other competition-minded operators also helped raise expectations around roasting, brewing and barista skill.
The coffee scene today
Excellent coffee can be found on both sides of the harbour, from Central and Sheung Wan to Kowloon neighbourhoods and farther out. Local roasters share menus with respected Asian and international guests. Espresso, hand brewing and inventive drinks all thrive, often in rooms designed to make every square metre count.
