Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Paris

Paris brings specialty coffee into a city with an unusually strong existing café identity. The newer movement has not displaced the zinc counter or terrace espresso; it has added careful sourcing, local roasting and filter brewing to that familiar rhythm.

How the scene took shape

Parisian café culture is centuries old, but its specialty chapter is recent. Australian roaster Tom Clark and French business partner Antoine Netien founded Coutume in 2010 and opened their Paris roastery and café in 2011. Alongside a small group of early independents, it helped make traceability, lighter roasting and trained baristas visible to a wider public.

The coffee scene today

The scene now stretches well beyond the early cluster of central cafés. Local roasters, tiny espresso counters and design-conscious neighbourhood shops can be found across the Right and Left Banks. Many retain a distinctly Parisian pace while offering seasonal espresso, hand brewing and thoughtful food.
