Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Helsinki

Helsinki belongs to one of the world's strongest coffee-drinking cultures, but specialty roasters have gradually shifted part of the market from familiar light blends toward distinct farms, seasons and brew methods.

How the scene took shape

Coffee has been embedded in Finnish home and café life for generations; Café Ekberg, founded in 1852, shows the depth of Helsinki's public café tradition. The modern specialty phase accelerated in the 2000s. Kaffa Roastery began in 2007 and became one of the local businesses connecting careful sourcing, roasting and education.

The coffee scene today

Helsinki's current offer spans traditional cafés, design-led neighbourhood rooms and small roasteries. Filter coffee feels natural rather than novel here, while specialty shops add more origin detail, hand brewing and carefully developed espresso to the city's established rhythm of frequent coffee breaks.
