Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Copenhagen

Copenhagen helped define modern Nordic coffee: light roasting, transparent sourcing and a preference for sweetness and clarity. Its specialty story is closely linked to competition baristas who turned those ideas into a durable local café culture.

How the scene took shape

The Coffee Collective, founded in 2007 by Klaus Thomsen, Peter Dupont and Casper Engel Rasmussen, is the clearest turning point. The founders combined competition experience with direct relationships and unusually transparent pricing. Their work did not begin Danish coffee culture, but it helped establish the vocabulary and standards that made Copenhagen internationally influential.

The coffee scene today

The scene now ranges from exacting brew bars to bakeries and all-day cafés that treat excellent coffee as a normal part of hospitality. Light-roasted filter coffee remains a signature, while newer roasters have broadened the styles, origins and price points available across the city.
