Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Prague

Prague's specialty coffee movement added a modern layer to a city already rich in café history. Independent roasters made lighter, traceable coffee easier to find, while a new generation of bars reclaimed the café as an everyday social space.

How the scene took shape

Prague's grand cafés were important cultural meeting places before the communist period disrupted much of that tradition. After 1989, café life returned in new forms. The present specialty phase took firmer shape around 2010, when Doubleshot began roasting and supplying coffee with a close focus on producers and preparation. Other Czech roasters and multi-roaster cafés quickly made the movement more diverse.

The coffee scene today

Prague now has a dense network of espresso bars and brew-focused cafés in the centre, Vinohrady, Karlín, Holešovice and Žižkov. Filter coffee is unusually prominent, and many shops rotate Czech and European roasters while maintaining a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere.
