Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Vancouver

Vancouver was an early Canadian centre for specialty coffee, supported by a long local roasting tradition and close cultural links to the Pacific Northwest. Its modern scene values both technical precision and relaxed neighbourhood hospitality.

How the scene took shape

Local roasting predates the third wave: the Neate family opened Neates Coffee in 1945. John Neate Jr. continued that lineage by starting JJ Bean in 1996, which became an early leader in Vancouver specialty coffee. In the following decade, businesses including 49th Parallel and Elysian pushed direct sourcing, seasonal menus and barista craft further into the mainstream.

The coffee scene today

The city now supports large specialty roasters and small independent counters, with strong clusters around Mount Pleasant, Gastown, Commercial Drive and Kitsilano. Espresso remains important, but clean filter coffee, Asian-influenced drinks and ambitious bakery programs are increasingly visible.
