Local coffee story
Specialty coffee in Montreal
Montreal's specialty coffee scene grew at the meeting point of European café habits, dense neighbourhood life and a new generation of local roasters. It is bilingual, design-conscious and less tied to one brewing style than its reputation might suggest.
How the scene took shape
Montreal has roasted and served coffee for generations; Albert-Louis Van Houtte built an early twentieth-century roasting business in the city. The current specialty era gathered momentum in the late 2000s. Café Myriade opened in 2008 and became an important showcase for careful espresso and filter preparation, while later roaster-cafés such as Saint-Henri helped move locally roasted, traceable coffee into more neighbourhoods.
The coffee scene today
Independent cafés now stretch from the Plateau and Mile End to Saint-Henri, Rosemont and beyond. The strongest shops mix serious coffee with Montreal's bakery and food culture, serving classic espresso drinks alongside lighter roasts and hand-brewed seasonal coffees.
