Local coffee story

Specialty coffee in Vienna

Vienna's coffee identity reaches far beyond espresso. Its historic coffeehouses made lingering over a cup part of city life, while a newer group of roasters has added traceable beans, lighter roasting and careful filter coffee to that inheritance.

How the scene took shape

Coffeehouses became established in Vienna in the late seventeenth century. The familiar story credits Georg Franz Kolschitzky after the 1683 siege, although the City of Vienna treats parts of that account as legend. The enduring legacy is clearer: the Viennese coffeehouse became a place to read, work and debate. Specialty businesses arrived much later; CoffeePirates, opened in 2012, was among the early local roaster-cafes to identify closely with third-wave coffee.

The coffee scene today

Traditional rooms and modern brew bars now operate side by side. Visitors can still order a melange in a grand café, but they can also find single-origin espresso, hand-brewed coffee and locally roasted seasonal lots, especially around the inner districts and university neighbourhoods.
