Local coffee story
Specialty coffee in Brisbane
Brisbane's specialty coffee culture took shape in the 2000s, as independent roasters translated the city's relaxed café habit into a more origin-focused craft. Warm weather also helped cold coffee, bright seasonal menus and open-air neighbourhood cafés become part of its character.
How the scene took shape
Brisbane had an established espresso culture before the third wave, but the late 2000s brought a more explicit focus on fresh roasting, direct relationships and barista education. Blackstar began wholesale roasting in July 2007 and describes itself as an early local specialty pioneer. Other roasters and café operators soon broadened the market, so the movement is better understood as a cluster than a single invention.
The coffee scene today
The present scene runs from small suburban roasteries to polished inner-city bars. Espresso remains central, alongside batch brew, pour-over and inventive iced drinks. West End, Fortitude Valley and the inner suburbs have been important centres, while serious coffee is now spread much more widely across the city.
